ANZAC historians are outraged by revelations that war memorials are being destroyed by Islamic radicals at Gallipoli.

The memorial was built in 1985 and was in line to be restored, and now the words welcoming the dead to rest on Turkish soil have been removed.

The memorial to fallen Anzac soldiers was damaged under what was called “restoration” works,  which also includes a further 15 memorials on the battlefields of Gallipoli.

The inscription previously read:

“Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives”

“You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country”

“After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well.”

These words were attributed to Turkey’s founding father Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and are inscribed on other memorial’s around the world.

Professor of history at the Peter Stanley said that because the Erdoğan government is in power, Islamists are now in the ascendant. Peter stated that “It depicts Turkey’s 86,000 Gallipoli dead as ‘Martyrs’, dying in a fight against Christian invaders.”

The memorial’s destruction was noticed by a guide, and posted on social media.
