1. Karangahake Gorge

Situated at the base of the Coromandel Range, the Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway follows the old railway line between Paeroa and Waihi. It gives access to impressive remains from the mining and railway eras.

This is a great place for adventure cycling. The ride includes some narrow sections where cyclists are asked to dismount for their safety and others’. The tunnel has some lighting, however we recommend having a bike light or torch.

2. The Redwoods

The Redwoods is a New Zealand mountain biking mecca, with more than 100km of trails.  You can head to Waipa Mill car park for bike hire and get advice on which of the many options you should choose.

3. Huka Falls Trails

Huka Falls Trails are riverside trails and make for a fun day out. The river is bridged at the Huka Falls viewing point, where cyclists can have a rest before heading back along the other side via the Redwood Track.

4. Arrow River Bridges Trail

The 100km of Queenstown Trails range from lakeside excursions to cross-country treks. The latter starts at Arrowtown, follows the Arrow River, and crosses 5 bridges. This is a famous destination for professional and hobby cyclists, and you’ll see many of them in high season.

5. The Puketapu Loop

The Puketapu Loop is an easy 2–3 hour adventure starting from Napier’s Pettigrew Arena. It is known for its pretty riverside trail, and also because cyclists can enjoy Puketapu Pub’s cold beer and country home cooking at the halfway mark.

6. Great Taste Trail

The Great Taste Trail is well-known for its wine, food, and art as it loops through the Nelson region’s picturesque countryside and along the coast.
